When one of the world’s most celebrated cricketers and India’s sports icon, Sachin Tendulkar, retired from the game on Saturday, 3 million people tweeted to thank him for his talented contributions.

“Fans all over the world took to Twitter to say #ThankYouSachin, honoring cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar as he finished his storied, 24-year career,” said Rishi Jaitly, Twitter’s India chief in a blog post according to Times of India.

On November 6, the Board of Control for Cricket launched a campaign on Twitter to thank Tendulkar for his contributions to the sport. All Twitter users who sent an message of appreciation to @BCCI handle with the #ThankYouSachin hashtag got a Tweet from @BCCI with a picture of Tendulkar, with a personalized message and signature in his handwriting on it.

Sachin Tendulkar, on November 13, acknowledged the campaign. “I am really touched with #ThankYouSachin messages. Your support all these years have inspired me to give my best,” he wrote on Twitter page.

According to Twitter, his post was re-tweeted over 16,000 times, making it the most re-tweeted message for India.

The master blaster Tendulkar retired from cricket as the world’s leading scorer in both test-match and one-day cricket, and the only man to score 100 international centuries.
