Summer festival season has become a fashion event in its own right, as thousands of music lovers attend big-name and boutique events to soak in the carnival-like atmosphere. Perhaps due to the spirit of the 1960s that many of these festivals draw upon, retro and vintage looks have always been part of the festival style. However, it seems that each year there is a race to be more unique, more daring, and more innovative with festival looks. The bohemian spirit of the 1960s and 1970s has given way for the bright colours and grungy accessories of the 1990s. From Coachella to Glastonbury, here are some of the wildest fashion trends seen so far this year.

Classic Boho

There’s perhaps no festival more associated with the Bohemian or Boho style than Coachella. It’s even inspired its own “H&M loves Coachella” collection from the Swedish retailer, complete with fringed kimonos, maxi dresses, and woven-print fabrics. The 1970’s are back in a major way in 2015, with flared jeans, crochet tops, and large wooden jewellery seen on both the catwalk and high street. With festivals like Coachella already known for their bohemian vibes, this has been taken to the next level this summer. Expect giant platforms, floor-length feathered maxis, and tiny crop tops.

Bridal style

A major trend this season is bridal style, whether it’s in the form of dainty lace sundresses or full-length, glamorous white maxis. White is always a practical look in hot weather anyway, reflecting light and keeping the wearer cool in the summer months. Festivalgoers are accentuating their gauzy, dreamy white bridal-style dresses with flower garlands for a bright and fresh style.

Fancy dress

England’s Glastonbury Festival featured a number of attendees who took their outlandish looks to the next level. “Fancy dress” costumes spotted at this festival included glittery bees, superheroes, adult babies, and more. Want to join in the fun? Try sporting a Funidelia ninja turtle costume, worn by the likes of Rihanna on a recent night out in NYC. Wearing costumes like this is always popular when travelling in a group of friends to festivals, as it brings the group together.

Kooky accessories

Naturally, a festival look wouldn’t be complete without show-stopping accessories. Whether it’s stacks of bangle bracelets or oversized hobo bags, this summer’s festivals are featuring a wide range of standout looks. Garland headbands, whimsical cat ear headbands, and all manner of chains have been seen on festival attendees this year. At Coachella, celebs were seen wearing grungy accessories like chokers and Doc Martens, while pin-up girl retro sunglasses and purple lipstick completed the zany looks.

Festival season is only now in full swing, meaning there’s still plenty of time to pull together an eye-popping look. Whether you prefer the flower power style of the 1970s or want to go all out wearing superhero costumes with your group of friends, you'll fit right in to this year’s crop of festival fashions!
