2015 Lexus NX Compact Luxury Utility Turbo or Hybrid

One of my favorite things when writing about new cars and trucks is having a chance to see new models before they come on the market. We recently had the opportunity to test drive the new 2015 Lexus NX CUV in Seattle, Washington. Not only was the weather beautiful, the vehicles we drove were quite impressive as well.

The new kid on the Lexus block for 2015 is the NX—a compact luxury utility vehicle that offers buyers the choice of a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with the NX 200t or a 300h hybrid model that provides a more powerful kick than expected with its 2.5-liter engine.

A kick-down switch in the hybrid ensures maximum power delivery upon request. Designers split the hybrid battery into two separate pods for better weight distribution and to free up more cabin space. Both models offer a version of pro-active all-weather drive.

Inspired by performance vehicles, the NX 200t and the 300h both add that touch of luxury Lexus is known for, while offering consumers more bang for their buck. The NX features a bolder spindle grille with an L-finesse design that looks more like a sports car than an SUV.

And that’s just the outside. The cabin is chockfull of new technology, including a Lexus-first wireless charging tray for compatible devices, a remote touch interface with touch pad, and a multi-information display with G-Force meter and boost gauge.

Following in the tire tracks of the new-generation Lexus GS and IS sedans, the 2015 NX brings dramatic design to a segment populated by boxy offerings. The boldest interpretation yet of the signature Lexus spindle grille and L-finesse design envelops a platform engineered by a team that includes active racers.

The NX F Sport is expected to be one of the most popular trims for the 2015 NX, boasting a more aggressive grille and lower front bumper, special wheels, black exterior mirrors, and exclusive interior trim and front sport seats, with an F Sport badge to proclaim its heritage.

Chief Engineer Takeaki Kato, a racer himself, brought in other racing enthusiasts to help in the F Sport’s design.

Their new 2.0-liter turbo engine has a combination water-cooled cylinder head, integrated exhaust manifold, and twin scroll turbocharger. Press materials tell us the Dynamic Torque Control AWD system can vary front and rear torque split between 50:50 and 100:0 for optimum traction and fuel economy.

The NX 300h hybrid offers the Lexus E-Four AWD system with an electric motor to drive the rear axle when required.

Both NX models have five seats and offer sumptuous cabin quality, with a roomy backseat area, and many upscale features in the standard package. Both models also offer better-than-usual fuel efficiency, although those estimates have not yet been released.

The NX does require premium gasoline. The MSRP of the NX has not been released either, but it will be slotted just below the RX 350 which starts at $40,970 to $47,620 (depending on model).
