NEW YORK—About 2,000 Superstorm Sandy victims waiting for reimbursement from the state of New York should get a check in the mail by the end of December.

According to a spokesperson with the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery, the checks will be going out mostly to homeowners in Long Island, who have already spent money on repairs.

New York Rising, the state’s storm recovery program, has allocated $500 million from the federal government for reimbursements, repairs, and reconstruction awards. The state is required to use most funding for areas outside of New York City.

The state has been awarded about $3.7 billion toward storm recovery in two installments. A plan is still being formulated for how to use the larger, more recent disbursement of $2 billion, which is targeted mostly for infrastructure.
