The shooting occurred at around 9 a.m. at Salvador B. Castro Middle School near downtown Los Angeles, police said, according to The Associated Press.
Two 15-year-old students suffered gunshot wounds, and the boy was believed to be in critical condition, according to police.
A girl with dark hair and wearing a sweatshirt was seen on TV cameras being led out of school in handcuffs.
A firearm was recovered in the incident, according to Bernal.
A 30-year-old woman was also hurt in the shooting, but she was not shot, officials told Fox News.
The school was placed on lockdown, but police said the situation is under control.
