IRVINE, Calif.—Two people were killed in a fiery crash in Irvine, and a man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, police said Monday.

Police and firefighters were called about 8 p.m. Sunday to Meadow Valley and Spring Valley regarding a crash between a Mini Cooper and Volkswagen Golf, police said.

The driver and a passenger were found dead in the Mini Cooper, which burst into flames following the collision, and Jack Varganagl, 20, of Irvine, who was behind the wheel of the Golf, was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, police said. Varganagl was injured in the crash and taken to an area hospital to be treated, police said.

The names of the victims were not immediately released as authorities were working to confirm their identities.

The cause of the crash was under investigation, but police said speed and drugs appear to have factored into it.

Anyone who witnessed the crash was asked to call Detective Roberto Solis at [email protected] or call 949-724-7024.
