Two men are dead, and three others are injured in a shooting near the campus of Alabama State University (ASU), according to a local report.

The shooting occurred Thursday night, Montgomery police Sgt. Jarrett Williams said, according to the Montgomery Advertiser.

According to Williams, a man was pronounced dead at the scene, while another died at a hospital. Both had been shot.

Williams added that two other men were hospitalized with life-threatening gunshot wounds, and another man was hospitalized with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

In a post on Facebook, the Montgomery Police Department said they responded to the incident around 7:15 p.m. at the 800 block of N. University Drive.

Investigators did not immediately release details about what prompted the shooting or if there are any suspects.

“The investigation is in its early stages and information is limited at this time,” the Montgomery Police Department announced on Facebook.

Quinton Ross, the president of ASU, in a statement cited by the Montgomery Advertiser, said that the shooting did not occur on campus but at a nearby business and that details of the incident are still being reviewed by university officials and Montgomery Police Department.

“Our prayers are with the families and friends of those who were victims in this shooting,” Ross said in the statement.
