Police in Toronto are on a manhunt to find the gunmen responsible for a mass shooting that left two people dead and 21 injured on Monday night.

Over 100 people attended an annual block party when a man shot another man and multiple gunshots were fired into the crowd, according to a Toronto police report.

Police received multiple calls to Danzig Street where people were fleeing on foot and by car.

“The crime that occurred in Scarborough yesterday was unprecedented for the City of Toronto. It is a crime that is shocking to all of our citizens,” Police Chief William Blair told reporters. Scarborough is a district in the eastern part of the city.

Many in Toronto said the incident was the worst gun violence in the city’s history.

Fourteen-year-old Shyanne Charles of Toronto and 23-year-old Joshua Yasay of Ajax were pronounced dead at the scene.

A 22-month-old toddler received a grazing injury from the shooting. The toddler and the other 20 injured people will recover after a time in the hospital, said Blair. In addition to the 23 shooting victims, a woman was trampled by the crowd.

It is not clear if gangs were involved in the shooting or how many people were involved. Blair said in a press conference that he’s met with the homicide squad and other units and they are investigating leads.

“We will be deploying significant, additional uniform resources into the community affected and to any other area where we believe retaliatory violence may take place,” Blair said.

A post-mortem exam for the two deceased is scheduled for Wednesday.
