Authorities say two 12-year-old children have died after falling through ice on a pond behind a home in southern Indiana.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources said the boy and girl died Thursday evening in southern Pike County.

Cpl. Joe Haywood with the DNR’s law enforcement division says the children, who weren’t related, went outside to play for a few minutes before dinner.

The boy’s mother then went outside and saw her son in the water.

A public safety diver pulled the two children out of the icy water, but both had been underwater for at least half an hour.

They were taken to Memorial Hospital in Jasper for treatment but died from their injuries.

Jasper is 120 miles southwest of Indianapolis.
