NEW YORK—Eliot Spitzer made his first appearance since announcing his run for comptroller of New York City on Monday in Union Square. A circus ensued, as seen in these photos.

After a media advisory announced he would greet voters at Union Square, the media hungrily awaited Spitzer at the 14th Street entrance. When he finally appeared, a gaggle of media crowded around the former governor, who resigned in 2008 after articles surfaced about his patronage of an escort service, Emperors Club VIP.

A sweaty Spitzer answered questions for over an hour, with hecklers shouting obscenities and telling him to go home. Others came up and congratulated his triumphant return saying they would vote for him as comptroller.

When asked what he thought of the attention he was receiving he compared it to the Barnum and Bailey Circus coming to Madison Square Park.
