At least two people were killed, including a 14-year-old boy, and seven others were injured during shootings across Chicago on Saturday.
The boy was shot several times near the 600 block of South Wabash Avenue and was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital. He was pronounced dead hours later, police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed to Fox32.
A homicide investigation into the boy’s death is underway, the report said.
The other fatal shooting took place in the East Chatham neighborhood on the South Side. At around 6 p.m. on Saturday, 34-year-old Deandre Bennett was shot by someone he was arguing with in South Greenwood, according to authorities.
The man was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, and he died there at 8 p.m., officials said.
Chicago Police said that gun violence continued to decline in June 2018, marking the 16th consecutive month of violence in the city.
Police noted that in June 2016, there were 325 murders and 1,597 shootings.
“For the remainder of the year we will continue to hire more police officers and focus on ways that we can make our streets safer while building trust and stronger partnerships with the communities we serve,” Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson told ABC7.
He credited the department’s crime-fighting strategy of enlisting more police officers as well as using the help of federal agents.
