The U.S. Secret Service is seeking a suspect who killed a 75-year-old man and injured a child in a hit-and-run while fleeing Secret Service officers in downtown D.C. on Wednesday afternoon.

“A man was tragically killed today by a driver who fled officers for an expired registration,” Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement.

“Police are working to locate the suspect and our deepest condolences go out to the victim’s family.”

According to a statement from Secret Service Uniformed Division Lt. Paul Mayhair, officers from the division tried to carry out a traffic stop near the National Mall shortly before 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday on a vehicle with expired registration.

The driver, whose sex is not specified by the Secret Service, “indicated that they would stop the vehicle, but then quickly fled,” after which he or she crossed a red light and hit multiple people in the crosswalk at 17th Street NW and Constitution Avenue.

Secret Service officers “immediately responded to render aid to the victim” before emergency crews arrived. “One person was transported from the scene in critical condition and later succumbed to injuries at an area hospital.”

The U.S. Park Police, in a statement, said that one victim was a 75-year-old male from Philadelphia who died after he was transported to George Washington University Hospital.

The other victim “was evaluated for injuries on scene and was released.” Multiple outlets reported that the victim is a 13-year-old girl. The two victims are relatives, Fox5DC reported. According to NBC News, the vehicle is a 2006 blue Honda Accord.
Any person with information related to the investigation is asked to contact the U.S. Park Police at (202) 379-4877 or [email protected].
