ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—“Stunning,” actress Zoe Hancock said of Shen Yun Performing Arts as it brought China’s unique traditional culture that extends over 5,000 years to Popejoy Hall in Albuquerque.

“It’s not like anything you see today,” said Hancock, who attended the performance with her husband.

“I love Chinese culture, so it’s wonderful to see the dancing and the storytelling.”

New York-based Shen Yun’s mission is to revive traditional Chinese culture and share it with the world through the universal language of music and dance.

“The water sleeves are beautiful,” Hancock said, referring to the Water Sleeves dance, which features the ladies of the Imperial Court and their flowing sleeves. “The women are truly elegant. I love the color.”

“[The dancers] all have a light and inner light about them, and the colors are certainly vibrant that way. I’m a spiritual person, so I’m really loving what I’m seeing and what I’m feeling. I just wish the Chinese people the best.

“We want you all to be free and we want you all to have the life that you want,” Zoe said of the Chinese people.

Chinese culture is divinely inspired, and the scenes in Shen Yun include deities and heavenly scenes that are believed to have been passed down to humankind by the Creator.
“The spiritual aspect of [Shen Yun] is very touching. And I think it’s important today, important for the message, important for what we’ve just all lived through for the past few years,” Zoe said.

“We need to connect to our higher selves. We’ve been so focused on what’s going on down here.”

For Kim and Clay Deitz who were also in the audience, watching Shen Yun was a beautiful experience.

“It’s excellent,” Clay said. “The music is fantastic; the costumes are amazing.”

Kim agreed. “I love the costumes, I love the storyline, I love the dancing—it’s absolutely beautiful.”

Clay also remarked on Shen Yun’s live orchestra, which harmonizes classical Western instruments with traditional Chinese instruments.

“I liked the live orchestra,” he said. “This is the first time I’ve heard that type of music.”
