SPRINGFIELD, Mo.—Every Christmas we are faced with gift giving and receiving. But what do you give someone who already has everything? Jeff Harp, a retired U.S. Army Corps of Engineers realty specialist, decided to gift a ticket for Shen Yun to his wife.

“I’ve read about [Shen Yun] for quite some time, and I just wanted to make sure we got to it. And I thought, what do I get a woman who has everything?” said Mr. Harp.

Although it was Mr. Harp’s first time experiencing Shen Yun, he said that he'd been wanting to see it since 2008.

“It was an enjoyable event. I’ve been familiar with [Shen Yun] for years, since about 2008. I always wanted to go, and we finally did. I thought it made a very nice Christmas present for my wife and a friend of ours,” said Mr. Harp, who has become a cattle rancher after retirement.

Shen Yun is based in New York, and its artists come from all over the world, united by a common mission to revive traditional Chinese culture.
“I absolutely loved it—it was fantastic. And I love the depiction of the Falun Gong and the baritone,” said Mr. Harp, referring to the Chinese spiritual practice of Falun Dafa.
The libretti sung by Shen Yun’s singers are written by Shen Yun’s artistic director. Although the text is sung in Chinese, a translation is projected onto the digital backdrop.

“The lyrics were tremendous ... at least the way I interpreted it is that we are in end times—I think that’s what he said, and I agree with him. And it’s coming sooner than we all think. We need to be ready,” remarked Mr. Harp.

The digital backdrop doesn’t only project text, it is actually patented technology that Shen Yun uses to extend the stage and allow the dancers to appear to fly into the air or dive deep into the sea.

“They were amazing ... Never seen anything quite like it,” expressed Mr. Harp.

Shen Yun’s orchestra works closely with the dancers to match them beat for beat. Shen Yun’s resident composers tailor each piece to fit perfectly with each dance.

“I love the music. And it was so seamlessly integrated into the dancing that it was not until near the end of the second half that I remembered it’s actually an orchestra playing there because it’s so coordinated,” said Mr. Harp.
