WORCESTER, Mass.—Thomas Plante saw the world-renowned Shen Yun Performing Arts for the first time at The Hanover Theatre on the evening of Jan. 13 and immediately made plans to see the performance again this season before Shen Yun changed its whole production for next year.

“I’m going to go back to Providence, I think it’s in May. So I’m going to see it again,” Mr. Plante shared after the performance.

“It was stunning. You know, the costumes were unbelievable. The stagecraft—with the way they do the visual on the screen and then translate that onto the stage—that’s amazing. It’s just an incredible show,“ he said. ”The performers are just outstanding. I couldn’t believe it.”
New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance company, and has a mission to share 5,000 years of Chinese civilization through music and dance.
In the traditional culture of China, Mr. Plante saw values that were universal.

“You know, America’s 400 years old. We’re talking about 5,000 years,” said Mr. Plante, an engineer. “So, you know, the people of China and the people of America aren’t all that different. We’re all strong families, you know, respect, honor. All this stuff is common to both cultures. So that’s the way I see it.”

Formed in 2006, the company has grown to include eight groups that tour simultaneously, and each year presents a whole new program. For many audience members, seeing Shen Yun is an experience like nothing else.

‘Very Important’

Also in the audience was Dalmo Mello, an IT associate director, with his wife; he felt Shen Yun conveyed something positive and spiritual through chronicling 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture.

“I’m a Catholic, and I reach a point when I say that all spiritual beliefs are important, no matter from which religion you belong or from which you believe in. And I think that’s the message. It’s the beauty of believing something and fighting for that, you know, and to send a positive message to the rest of the world,” he said.

He added that Shen Yun’s mission was an important one.
You know, humanity’s faith nowadays pretty much depends on what we did in the past. And if you go back to the past, you'll see that most of the beliefs can be applied to modern society. It’s very important.”
