NEW YORK—Events held around the city are celebrating Black History Month, including events this week.
An event showing how Blacks and Latinos are connected through history, called The Black Latin Beat, begins at 10 a.m. on Monday Feb. 6 at the J. Hood Wright Recreation Center in Manhattan.
Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing: How the Apollo Theater Shaped American Entertainment, an exhibition celebrating the Apollo Theater’s status as a historical and cultural landmark with an impressive array of photographs, artifacts, costumes and videos, will open at the Museum of the City of New York on Feb. 8 and run through May 1, according to nycgo.com.
In conjunction with the exhibition, panel discussions about the Apollo’s importance, and rich heritage, are scheduled for Feb. 10 and 15. A night exploring the theater’s Jazz legacy, hosted by Loren Schoenberg, executive director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, will be held on Feb. 28.
The African Burial Ground National Monument has an afternoon film series every Friday and Saturday, at 1 p.m., focusing “on different sites throughout the National Park Service and how each celebrate Black History Month,” says an event description. Park rangers offer a closer look at the
visitor center every Wednesday during the month with gallery talks about topics such as the slave revolt of 1741.Family-friendly arts and crafts events will be held on Feb. 12 and Feb. 16. All events are free.
