HOUSTON—Opera singer Naya Maria Rodríguez-Castiñado has been chasing Shen Yun Performing Arts for two years now.

“I’ve seen the advertisement, handing out fliers in Lincoln Center, New York. And then another time I saw a little bit of the film footage and I was able to see some of it in motion and also the musicians and the music and it’s absolutely gorgeous. So, I can’t wait to see the whole thing,” Ms. Rodríguez-Castiñado said.

Ms. Rodríguez-Castiñado came to buy tickets for her sister, sculptor Nina Rodríguez-Castiñado, her mother, and a musician friend, at the Jones Hall for Performing Arts in Houston on Dec. 27, after the New York-based company’s matinee.

“There will be four of us, on New Year’s Eve,” Naya Maria Rodríguez-Castiñado said. Ms. Rodríguez-Castiñado said she doesn’t live in Houston, but the timing was finally right. “We just came to visit for Christmas, because Nina, the sculptor, she lives in Brussels, in Belgium. And I’m now living in New York, but I also travel a lot, because as an opera singer I’m in Italy and in Spain and a bit everywhere. So, and Nina too, she’s in Brussels and then back in New York and elsewhere. So, we travel a lot.”

“We didn’t want to miss out. We’ve been chasing this show for two years, and every single time we’re in New York and they’re showing, we’re like, ‘No, we’re leaving the next day, no!’”

This time, on the sisters’ Christmas visit, Ms. Rodríguez-Castiñado said her mother mentioned Shen Yun—”the word, the magic word. Oh my god, OK!” She wasted no time.

“We came right over to buy the tickets straight away, just like 30 minutes ago. … We didn’t want to miss it again.”
