Salma Hayek, the acclaimed Mexican actress and filmmaker, talks about her undocumented immigrant status, and admits she was in the United States illegally in an interview with V Magazine Spain.

“I was an illegal immigrant in the United States,” she told V Magazine, according to Fox News Latino. “It was for a small period of time, but I still did it.”

In 1991 at the age of 25, Hayek's visa expired after she moved to Los Angeles to study acting.

Hayek’s publicist told E! News that her illegal immigrant status was quickly “cleaned up” when she went to Mexico and renewed the visa, adding that she is now an American citizen.

“I had to endure the worst time of all in terms of racial discrimination in Hollywood when I first started out,” Hayek said in the interview. “It was inconceivable to American directors and producers that a Mexican woman could have a lead role.”

“Hollywood has definitely grown, in embracing the inclusions of Latinos in the world,” she added.

Hayek recently starred in the comedy Grown Ups and is slated to appear in The Driver and do voice acting for Puss in Boots.
