KAWAGUCHI, Japan—Several Japanese elites said they were astounded by the beauty of Shen Yun Performing Arts, with some of the theatergoers even moved to tears.

“Shen Yun is extraordinarily excellent,” said Mr. Uchu Taikan, a Chinese painter in Japan. “I was very touching in the beginning. Then excited. Then I was in awe. Shen Yun’s beauty is astounding!”

Mr. Uchu said he’s an artist but was stunned when he saw so many beautiful things in a performance. He felt that Shen Yun connected audiences to heaven.

“It’s majestic. It’s really spectacular,” he said. “This performance can only be found in heaven. How lucky we are to attend it in the human world!”

“The saturation of Shen Yun’s colors is stunning. It made me feel that the world suddenly became so wonderful, and we human beings can have a great relationship with divine beings,” he said. “I felt elevated and purified.”

New York-based Shen Yun is the world’s top classical Chinese dance company. The performance is presented through highly-expressive art forms such as classical Chinese dance, original orchestral music performed live, soloists who sing in the bel canto tradition, animated digital backdrops, and more.

Moved to Tears

“The stories [that Shen Yun presented] are very touching. I cried twice,” said Mr. Omuro Shintaro, an executive of a well-known Japanese pharmaceutical company.
Mr. Omuro first attended Shen Yun in the United States in 2017. This is his second time of attending Shen Yun, which made him very happy.

“It’s really entertaining to sit on the first row to watch Shen Yun. I could see clearly even the movements of dancers’ fingertips,” he said. “Their expressions are really delicate.”

Mr. Omuro, a huge fan of Shen Yun, brought the 2017 Shen Yun program with him to attend the new production.

“I had very high expectations today. It turned out that the performance is far beyond my imagination. I want to see more,” he said with a big smile on his face.

Every year, Shen Yun puts on an entirely new production, and each Shen Yun performance consists of nearly 20 vignettes. With a mission to show the beauty and goodness of “China before communism,” Shen Yun’s story-based dances bring to life China’s history. For 5,000 years, China’s civilization was built on values and virtues from the spiritual teachings of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism.

‘The Dancers’ Skills Are Profound, Outstanding’

“I was shocked when the curtain first opened,” said Mr. Kaneko Kentaro, the president of Kaneko Boxing Gym. “The colors are so bright and splendid. The performance is simply brilliant. Too beautiful.”

The Kaneko Boxing Gym is famous in Japan. It has trained eight Japanese champions, five Eastern Pacific champions, and one world champion.

Mr. Kaneko said he can understand classical Chinese dance because some of the boxing actions are from the dance.

“The dancers’ skills are profound, outstanding! To obtain this level of skills, people have to suffer extraordinary training,” he said. “They are amazing … they’re cognizant of every detail.”

Mr. Kaneko said he was uplifted by Shen Yun, that “right before the Lunar New Year, I can attend this feast of art. I will be happy for the whole year!” he said.

Mr. Kato Yuji, a department manager of a trading company, said he was amazed by the dynamic backdrop.

“It’s very interesting. Actually, I felt shocked. I saw the people walking down to the stage from the backdrop. I was so surprised. Then I realized that this is a fantastic design,” he said.

Mr. Kato was also amazed by the Chinese music instrument erhu, which he said: “It only has two strings. How can it make that touching sound? It’s magical and fabulous.”

Mr. Kato is an amateur dancer himself, and expressed his admiration for Shen Yun’s dancers.

“The dances are all well-trained. The dances are noble, graceful, and fantastic,” he said. “The female dancer’s movements are enchanting and delicate. All their movements are very difficult.”
