ALBANY, N.Y.—Experiencing Shen Yun Performing Arts with family is a very rewarding experience. Constance Morgan and her grandson, Nathan, found warmth and hope in Shen Yun.
“It’s a message of love, kindness, and respecting our humanity when we stumble, you know? It’s all going to be OK,” said Ms. Morgan, a physical therapist.
“It’s beautiful. It’s just beautiful. The stories and the integrity—it’s gorgeous,” she said.
“I think it was really good. I love the music. Amazing,” he said.
Shen Yun is based in New York, and its orchestra features traditional Chinese instruments like the pipa and erhu as well as a range of percussion instruments.
“I learned more about my culture, and I just learned that music could be so different and make you feel wonderful,” said Nathan.
Ms. Morgan agreed that Shen Yun’s music is a wonderful experience.
“It’s just outstanding—takes your breath away. It was fun watching him enjoy it and bring out the musical part of my grandson, too,” she said.
One particular instrument, the erhu, has a moment to shine on stage. The erhu only has two strings, yet its expressive ability is endless.
Shen Yun demonstrates the strong ties that China once had with the divine. Before communism, China’s dynasties sought guidance from Buddhism, Taoism, and other schools of thought, such as the teachings of Confucius.
Ms. Morgan shared that in Shen Yun she saw “a respect for the divine and respect for each other.”
She added that she loved the humor in the performance as well.
“I want to thank them for their dedication and their devotion,” said Ms. Morgan.
