SAO PAULO, Brazil—Renowned plastic surgeon Lecy Marcondes Cabral and his girlfriend, Inew Camargo Mendes Pereira enjoyed the sixth of Shen Yun’s seven consecutive performances at Teatro Bradesco on the evening of March 21.

Mr. Lecy, in particular, was wowed by the diversity of Shen Yun’s programs and thought it was a breath of fresh air.

“I thought it was very interesting because the performance showed both the divine and the earthly world,” he said.

“They also portrayed modern Chinese society—I thought that was very interesting because some people in Brazil are very much leaning toward the communist side but [Shen Yun] is not! Those who came here thinking they’d show something pro-communist were shocked.”

“It’s such a beautiful show!”

Shen Yun Performing Arts was founded in 2006 by New York-based artists who dreamt of reviving and sharing with the world China’s 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture. Its eight equally-sized companies are slated to visit over 180 cities this year.

Ms. Cabral loved the spiritual elements of Shen Yun.

“I think [the artists’] harmony reflected their beliefs. It brought us that spirituality.”

Following the 1949 communist takeover, Chinese traditional culture was systematically eradicated by the ruling regime. According to the company’s website, Shen Yun returns each year with a brand-new set of programs that showcases the beauty of “China before communism.”

However, for their insistence on reviving traditional culture and telling the truth about human rights issues in modern Chinese society, Shen Yun is currently banned by the ruling communist party from performing in China.

Also, in the audience were lawyers Telma Cristina de Carlos and Getulio Jose de Arauja Silva.

The couple was amazed by the technique and agility of Shen Yun’s dancers and deeply lamented that Shen Yun cannot be seen in China.

“[The performers] were wonderful. We loved it and we’re excited!” Ms. Carlos said.

“Unfortunately, China doesn’t have the privilege that we have today of watching these 5,000 years of tradition unfold. The [Chinese] government is prohibiting people from expressing themselves and from spreading this joy and good feeling around.”

Mr. Silva was pleasantly Shen Yun’s depiction of the heavens and the divine.

“I always thought China was not too spiritual. As it turned out, they are. Just like us!”

Though Ms. Carlos is not too familiar with Chinese culture, she thoroughly enjoyed the performance and found a connection with the traditional values that Shen Yun portrayed.

“It was amazing! We don’t know much about Chinese culture. We’ve heard about Mongolia and Manchuria and have seen these places on film—but to see [the performance] live, we’re impressed. The dancers were so synchronized, it was perfect! Their depiction of truth and compassion were wonderful.”

Mr. Silva added excitedly that “I’ve never seen a theatre show like this before. It was fantastic and unbelievable what I saw. If I can, I’ll travel to [Shen Yun’s next performing city] to see it again!”
