GUADALAJARA, Mexico—Martin Mauricio Cuburu, a CEO, was lucky enough to secure tickets to Shen Yun Performing Arts for himself and his wife, Ina Maria Quiñonez Gutierrez. The couple watched Shen Yun’s sixth performance at Conjunto Santander Artes Escénicas, Universidad de Guadalajara, on May 8 and were part of an enthusiastic audience that burst into applause when the performance ended. The couple said that they believe Shen Yun brought hope.

“I think this performance is extremely wonderful, with rich colors and beautiful music, and it fully demonstrates tradition and culture,” said Mr. Cuburu.

“I really like the colors of the show and the girls’ costumes. I am impressed by the precision of all the dances,” said Ms. Gutierrez.

Based in New York, Shen Yun was founded in 2006 and is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Since its inception, it has rapidly grown to eight equally sized companies that tour the world simultaneously. Shen Yun’s mission is to revive traditional Chinese culture and the beauty and goodness of China before communism.

“I was deeply impressed by the diversity of the show, the live music, and the perfect combination of singing and dancing,” said Mr. Cuburu. “At the same time, I was also surprised that such a show could not be seen in China.”

According to Shen Yun’s website, traditional Chinese culture is deeply rooted in the spiritual teachings of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. Although these beliefs were suppressed when the Chinese Communist Party seized power, Shen Yun preserves the spiritual elements that have long defined traditional Chinese culture. Mr. Cuburu said that to him, the stories that featured spirituality stood out the most.

“Chinese traditional culture has a long history, and there is a lot worth learning from us. I think many traditions are even older than the Christianity we practice, and these traditions enrich our culture and faith.”

Mr. Cuburu also said that he saw “respect for tradition, [and] respect for people” in Shen Yun’s performance.

“I think that’s the most important thing. I saw a deep respect,” he said.

Mr. Cuburu said he learned that “good things will return. We are in a dark time, but light will return, and goodness will come again. To me, that’s the most important thing.”

Also in the audience were Jesus Parra, a retired engineer, and Araceli Galarza, a business owner. Ms. Galarza said the beauty of Shen Yun’s performance and traditional Chinese culture moved her to tears.

“It is a work that transmits a lot of joy, a lot of passion for art. I loved it, I am fascinated with the work. Its culture is extraordinary. I was struck by how they transmit a very great love for their culture.”

Ms. Galarza said that she appreciates the values in traditional Chinese culture the most, and that the values she saw presented in Shen Yun’s performance were “love, respect, tolerance, compassion, [and] divinity.” She also expressed her gratitude to Shen Yun for sharing authentic Chinese culture with Mexico.

“I am moved by the values that are transmitted through the work and how sometimes we have to change due to violence because it does not allow us to enjoy that privilege of culture. How nice that they come here to our country to show that culture, that love, that passion for art. That is very beautiful.”

Ms. Galarza also said that the divinity of Shen Yun “makes you dream, makes you see a [different] world.”

“Despite what is happening in our world, it makes you see something beautiful, something that can be possible if we all work on ourselves.”

Ms. Galarza’s message to the performers was, “May they continue with that passion for art to transform the world and share the love of culture.”
