CLEVELAND—When the Chinese Communist Party took power in China, Chinese culture was physically destroyed and spiritually warped. Thankfully, Shen Yun Performing Arts is reviving this lost culture and sharing it with the world.

“They’re beautiful, just to see what their culture was like in the past, so they can express it now in the United States, it was great,” said Jackie Bajc, a retired teacher. She and her husband David saw Shen Yun at The State Theatre at Playhouse Square on Feb. 5.
Shen Yun is based in New York and it is dedicated to reviving the deeply spiritual culture that China once had.

“Fantastic. We’re faith-based people so that really means a lot to us to see something like that,” said David Bajc, a corporate strategic planner.

Having a brother who had lived in China before, it was no surprise to Mrs. Bajc to see Shen Yun depicting the crimes against humanity that are happening in present-day China through a story-based dance.

“He would tell us about how they used to have to go to church in secret,” said Mrs. Bajc.

Due to Shen Yun showcasing a China before communism and revealing such crimes, Shen Yun is unable to perform in China.

“[Shen Yun is] not allowed, which is kind of disturbing that the Chinese people are missing this great type of show. It’s sad,” said Mr. Bajc.

“It kind of takes me back and [lets me] appreciate what we have here in the United States, the freedoms that we have, that we can see things like that,” he added.

And the Bajcs thought what they saw in Shen Yun was beautiful.
“I loved it. It was very good. I love the scenery, the background, and the dancing was beautiful. It was gorgeous,” said Ms. Bajc.

Shen Yun’s backdrop technology is patented. The way the artists interact with the backdrop allows the characters being depicted to fly high into the sky or dive deep into the sea.

“I loved the performance. I liked the backgrounds, the color ... all the interaction between the performers and the screens, and then how the colors all come together. It was very enlightening and very divine,” added Mr. Bajc.
