The New York Yankees have made a one-year, $12 million offer to free agent third baseman Kevin Youkilis, according to a report on the MLB’s website.
The former Red Sox star would fill in for Alex Rodriguez, who is slated to miss roughly half the season with hip surgery. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, who reportedly met twice with Youkilis’ agent wouldn’t confirm the offer.
“I’m not in a position to say offers [or] non-offers,” said Cashman.
Youkilis, 33, split last season between the Red Sox and the White Sox hitting a combined .235 with 19 home runs and 60 RBIs. The numbers are well below his career average of .283 as injuries affected his performance.
Youkilis, who won a Gold Glove at third in 2007, can play either corner infield position.
