The World of Warcraft expansion Warlords of Draenor hasn’t been officially announced yet, but players are using their expertise to guess when it will be.
Players on the Battle Net forums started a thread speculating on the release date, using the dates between the announcement of past expansions and the release dates.
Other dates such as the start of the beta test were used.
The guesses mostly range from July to September 2014.
Another angle on the release date comes from the pre-order pages, on which one was listed: “Game is expected to release on or before 12/20/2014.”
That makes a very big window for a possible release. Some reports are saying that the game will be out sometime in the fall. But some gamers on the forum pointed out that any dates thrown out before an official announcement by Blizzard Entertainment are purely speculative.
“Before anyone mentions their favorite retailer’s posted release date: (we go thru this every. single. solitary. expansion.) Lots of retailers post a release date that is just their guess at what it might be, and being far enough out that they hope to have a better idea before that date actually arrives. But they also make it close enough to make people think it really is ‘coming soon,’ in order to get more people to order it from them, increasing their own sales,” said one gamer.
“That’s all it is: JUST A GUESS!!! Everybody, from the general public to fan sites to retailers, will find out the official release date on the SAME day, because Blizz issues a VERY big press release and posts it all over the front page of this site and Blizzard.com. Every WoW fan site and video game site around picks it up and posts it the same day, too. There is never any secret spilled or anybody knowing before anybody else. NOBODY knows early, including retailers.”
The last expansion, Mists of Pandaria, was announced in October 2011 and released on September 25, 2012.
Warlords of Draenor was announced in November 2013 but hasn’t even proceeded to the alpha test yet, which is the next stage listed. The other expansions made it to that stage in eight to nine months.
After that comes the press tour, the closed beta test, major patches, and the press release detailing the actual release date.
