Portugal and the US tied on Sunday night during the World Cup in Brazil.

This means that Portugal now has a point, while the US and Germany have 4 points each in Group G. Ghana has 1 point and Portugal has 1 point.

The best scenario for the US is to win its next game against Germany, but a draw with the Germans could send both teams into the next round because each will have 5 points.

If Ghana wins and the US loses, then goal differential will be compared to see who advances. If Ghana wins and the U.S. loses, then the goal differential will be added up.

But if Portugal wins and the US loses, the goal differential will also have to be added up for the US to advance. If Portugal and Ghana tie, then Germany and the US will advance.

A tie is one point, a win is 4 points, and a loss is 0 points in the World Cup.

AP: Oh so close, Americans wilt at end in Amazon heat

MANAUS, Brazil (AP) — They were less than 30 seconds away.

The Americans were about to romp into the round of 16 at the World Cup, about to walk off with their first come-from-behind win at soccer’s showcase. About to advance with a game to spare. About to win consecutive World Cup games for the first time since 1930.

But they wilted in the Amazon heat and humidity.

Varela’s goal on a diving header off Cristiano Ronaldo’s cross on the game’s last play gave Portugal a 2-2 tie Sunday on an exhausting night in the rainforest capital.

Now the Americans may need at least a point Thursday against Germany to advance to the knockout stage. They could advance with a loss, depending on the result of the Portugal-Ghana game that will be played simultaneously.

“Obviously we’re disappointed. But you have to look at the positives,” captain Clint Dempsey said.
