On a day of affection, such as Valentine’s Day, one may expect a partner to make a showing of their love. However, one man’s avoidance of just that left him with both damage to his ego, and his cheeks.
A woman slapped her boyfriend over ten times on a public sidewalk in Dazhou City, Sichuan Province, China. A crowd surrounded the couple and some people filmed the incident which occurred on May 20, according to Chinese news outlet Cover News.
The man stood still, enduring every hit from his girlfriend, and he didn’t even allow the police to take her away from the scene, the report said.
The woman had been paying for all of the man’s food and clothing, and was hoping that he'd buy her a new smartphone on China’s new version of Valentine’s Day, according to Chinese news outlet Red Star News. However, the man initially hid from her, since he could not make the purchase.
Public Display of Anger
The argument happened on May 20, or “5/20.” The numbers five, two, and zero in that order sound similar to “I love you” in certain Chinese dialects.A combination of footage from surveillance cameras and smartphone users were shared on Weibo, China’s version of Twitter, showing the altercation between the two. The first group of people to watch the conflict appear to be a group of young school children.
The man, apparently saying nothing through the conflict, stands still and takes every swipe at his face the woman takes.
As people begin gathering around, several women attempt to intervene. The woman brushes them off and continues venting her anger at her boyfriend.
When the police were called to the scene, the man defended his girlfriend. A woman filming the scene with the police said that the man was even hugging her, not allowing the police to take her away.
The boyfriend also said that he deserved it for his behavior, and that the two would settle the dispute together, according to Red Star News.
