This beautiful story, exemplifying the spirit of giving and loving care, touched many hearts last year around Christmas.
The precious incident, which unfolded at a shoe store in Muntinlupa City, the Philippines, was recounted on Facebook by Caloy Pineda, the store manager.
On that particular day in December 2017, Pineda noticed a customer named Rexel walking into his shoe store, wearing a worn-out shirt, scruffy pants, and an old pair of slippers.
Rexel, likely to be in his late 30s or early 40s, seemed excited to be able to buy new shoes after all the hard work. “You can see that he looks hard working, like he works difficult jobs,” Pineda wrote.
He looked around at the discount section and picked a pair of shoes priced at 1,200 Philippine pesos (approx. US$22.09).
As Rexel took out his hard-earned money—all PHP20 notes (approx. US$0.37)—and started counting, he realized he didn’t have enough bucks to buy a pair of shoes.
At this moment, a woman, Lilliam Quiat, who was also shopping for shoes, caught sight of Rexel counting his money and approached him for a chat.
Through the conversation, Quiat came to learn Rexel had been saving up to buy a pair of World Balance sneakers because his pair of slippers was worn. Rexel’s circumstance struck a sympathetic chord in Quiat, and she decided to chip in money to get him the shoes.
Quiat constantly persuaded the shy Rexel to choose a pair of shoes he truly wished to have.
Earlier this morning, a man in his I think late 30s to early 40s, wearing a shirt, an old styled pants and an old pair…
In the end, Rexel selected a pair priced at PHP1,799 (approx. US$33.12). The shoes exceeded Rexel’s budget; however, Quiat offered to pay for the remaining dollars.
Pineda revealed that Quiat really loved to pay for the full amount, but she didn’t bring her wallet with her.
“[The 500 pesos] was the last of my money,” Quiat wrote, in the text messages with Pineda.
After helping Rexel to get the shoes, Quiat bade him goodbye, wishing him “Merry Christmas!”
Rexel looked happy to have the new pair of shoes that he really needed.
Meanwhile, Pineda was inspired to see that in a world full of fraud, chaos, and greed, there are still good people who care for others—and one such soul was creating the magic of kindness right there at his shoe store!
“God bless madam, and I hope many more like you. The Lord is the one who will return blessings to you and your family. Advance Merry Christmas!” Pineda concluded.
The post went viral, garnering over 29,000 reactions.
Are you inspired by Quiat’s act of generosity toward Rexel? She has shown us the real spirit of Christmas!
Our hearts and souls are surely enriched through giving and helping others to better their lives. Just as ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu said: “The wise man does not lay up his own treasures. The more he gives to others, the more he has for his own.”
