The wife of notorious Mexican drug lord “El Chapo” Guzman says that she fears for his life.

In an interview with Spanish-language broadcaster Telemundo, Emma Coronel Aispuro said that she believes authorities are set on getting even with Guzman following the embarrassment of his escape from jail last year.

The drug lord was re-arrested on Jan. 8 after making headlines around the world by escaping from a high security prison in last July. Before that Guzman escaped from prison in 2001 by bribing guards with $2.5 million.

“They want to make him pay for his escape,” she said. “Of course I am afraid for his life.”

Guzman is among the most notorious drug lords in the world. His Sinaloa Cartel is responsible for a large part of Mexico’s drug trafficking into the United States. The cartel has been linked to numerous horrific murders over the years.

The United States is seeking Guzman’s extradition where is facing seven indictments in different U.S. jurisdictions.

Aispuro, 26, a former beauty queen who married Guzman, (58 or 61) at age 18, has twin daughters from him who were born in 2011.

According to Aispuro, Guzman is monitored continuously and is not allowed to sleep. A claim echoed by his lawyers who say he is being woken up every two hours. “They are making me into a Zombie,” lawyer Juan Pablo Badillo quoted El Chapo as saying.

Mexican authorities are determined not to let him escape again. While El Chapo is staying in the same high-security prison he was in when he escaped last year, he is now being monitored by motion censors, dogs, and frequently moved from one cell to another.
