Widowed at 27, American Idol Contestant Leaves Judges in Tears with Her Original Song

March 21, 2019 Updated: March 27, 2019

After losing her young husband in a horrific accident, this 27-year-old widow asked herself what her purpose in life was. Well, with incredible strength, she rose above her pain and tragedy and found her purpose.

When Lauren Engle, from Redlands, California, stood on the stage of American Idol as a contestant on March 17, what unfolded next brought the three judges—Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie—to tears.

Before singing, Lauren held back her own tears as she revealed to the judges her reason for auditioning for the show. Her musician husband, Garrett, had been involved in a terrible car accident in 2017 and lost his life. Their pet dog also perished in the accident. With a voice shaking with emotion, she recalled the event and revealed that she wanted to continue her music to honor him.

“I never thought being 27 years old, I’d be a widow,” she said through her tears.

“Losing him made me realize I’ve got nothing else to do but keep doing music and to honor him.”

She had first met her husband seven years earlier at a Halloween party where he was dressed as a pirate. “I love pirates,” she giggled in her American Idol audition. The pair had a strong connection through their music; he was a singer/guitarist and she was a singer back in her high school years. Garrett brought out the best in Lauren by encouraging her to take up singing again and asked her: “Why are you not doing what you love to do?”

He proposed to her on her 22nd birthday, and they married in September 2014. Then, three years later, he was gone in a heartbeat. “What we would normally do on Sundays is go and get dinner, we just had a really fun night out and next thing I knew, I woke up in the hospital,” Engle said. “We were at an intersection, someone had ran a red light and T-boned us.”

All three judges were visibly overcome by her lyrics and her rendition, which was full of emotion and pain. “I don’t know how you did it, myself,” Richie said.

“That is really beautiful,” Perry said. “Lauren, you’re so strong. I was really invested in the lyrics of your song. I felt the emotion and I felt the pain. I can’t imagine singing that, or writing that or even going through any of what you’ve been through. You’re just a beautiful testimony to have gone through all that, still standing. One foot in front of the other, right? And you’ve made it all the way here.”

Richie gave Engle some words of encouragement: “He was a very lucky man.”

“Forget about the competition for a moment. You have a mission for the rest of your life to be you. Enjoy the ride. He’s right here,” Richie added.

Fellow judge Luke Bryan was impressed with her strong country voice. It was a “Yes!” all round from the judges.

As all three judges hugged Engle, she was overcome with emotion. While holding onto her ticket to Hollywood, she said: “I’ve asked multiple times what my purpose is in life after the accident and as to why I’m still here.”

“So, today, there is still a purpose.”
