Have you ever experienced the hardship of going hungry? While some children may go to school with only the best of meals for lunch, this poor schoolboy couldn’t afford proper food—just a mix of rice and junk food was all he could afford. His plight is a powerful reminder for the rest of us that we should cherish what we have because there are those among us, both young and old, who have next to nothing.
While going without a proper meal or basic necessities isn’t restricted to childhood or adulthood, this particular incident happened to a hungry little boy, and even as most parents want the best for their children, financial burdens can sometimes put a strain on their ability to provide even the bare necessities of living. Sometimes, there is no other option than for their children to go without proper food.
Such is the case for one student in the Philippines, whose parents struggle to make ends meet.
One day, a schoolteacher named Choniil Mascariñas noticed that one of her students was eating junk food mixed with rice for lunch. Shocked by what she saw, she questioned the boy about it.
The boy was a bit ashamed about his humble situation but revealed to Choniil in a heartfelt reply that his family could only afford snacks such as Bida and Super Crunch, as he was only given a pitiful 3 Philippine pesos (US$0.17) for his daily allowance.
When asked why his family couldn’t even get him dried fish for lunch, he just shrugged it off to evade the embarrassing question.
Later, Choniil found out that the boy’s family was earning their daily bread by making and selling uling (charcoal), a job that wouldn’t make much money. They relied on the meager income to sustain their livelihood.

Choniil shared her student’s struggle more widely by posting photos of the boy eating his miserable junk food lunch on her Facebook page.
The boy’s situation tugged the heartstrings of many netizens, who tagged their friends and relatives to make them see how fortunate they were. They also chipped in to offer money and groceries to the poor child so that he would be able to afford a nutritious lunch while at school.
Though their help might only offer the boy temporary reprieve, it’s still heartwarming to know that there are kindhearted people out there who care.
According to Enough Food For Everyone IF, a campaign to fight hunger, a child dies of hunger every 10 seconds.
“In every minute of every day, four children die of hunger,” said Eddie Izzard, an English stand-up comedian in one of IF’s promotional videos.
People around the world should act with more compassion towards one another, and help their neighbors, their brothers and sisters; and then perhaps we will be one step closer to ending the plight of such starving children living in poverty.
We should also be thankful for what we have because many kids elsewhere around the world simply have nothing.
