A female sand tiger shark attacked and slowly ate a smaller male shark in a Seoul aquarium.

Aquarium officials say it was likely a turf war that prompted the 8-year-old female sand tiger shark to attack and consume the 5-year-old male banded houndshark.

It took the larger shark about 21 hours to slowly ingest the male until only his tail was visible. The female will retain the male shark for a few days, but then ultimately regurgitate it because she’s not able to digest him.

Aquarium officials say the female might have reacted after being startled. Sharks have their own territories and sometimes when they bump into each other they bite out of astonishment, the official said.

There are about 42 sharks, 20 stingrays, and two turtles living in the tank, the rest of whom appear present and accounted for.

This isn’t the first time shark eats shark has been captured on film.
