Vivid green foliage turns red, yellow, orange. A rustic building stands still near rushing waterfalls, like a strong memory passed by the river of time.

The ordinary activities of daily life in rural West Virginia appear alongside the mystical maneuvers of nature. Cars rush along an arch bridge. Mist weaves through the valley like an aery snake or the steam rising from a magical brew.

The solemn procession of clouds is followed by the whirling dance of the stars—the characteristic beauty of time-lapse film.

Filmmaker Harun Mehmedinovic chose New River Gorge as the site for his latest SKYGLOW project. SKYGLOW is a crowdfunded quest to raise awareness about the effects of urban light pollution. Mehmedinovic and his colleagues film dark sky preserves in North America.

The film is titled “Melancholy Gorge,” and it premiered on BBC Earth.
