Miami Heat guard Dwayne Wade, a member of USA Basketball in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, will not participate in the 2012 games this summer as he needs knee surgery, according to a report on the NBA’s website.

Wade called USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo and head coach Mike Krzyzewski to tell them the news, which was not unexpected. Wade played through the playoffs with knee problems.

“I’ve decided to listen to my doctors and get the procedure I need on my knee,” Wade told The Associated Press Thursday. “USA Basketball said I had to do what was best for me.”

The procedure will put Wade on crutches for just a day, but he would need it done well before the Olympics to be ready in time for training camp.

Wade’s absence leaves the USA team with 17 players in the mix for 12 spots.
