Volunteers Needed for Meals on Wheels
Vice President of Communications with Meals on Wheels Central Texas, Thad Rosenfeld recently reminded people to volunteer for their organization during the summer, since there are typically fewer volunteers at that time, and elderly people need their help 365 days a year.
“We always say that our volunteers deliver more than a meal. They’re delivering a hot nutritious meal that our kitchen staff produces, but they’re also providing friendship, a safety check, a reminder that they haven’t been forgotten by the rest of our community,” said Rosenfeld.
The requirements for volunteering are: You must be 18 years old or older, own a car with valid liability insurance, and be subject to a criminal background check. Volunteers are welcome to bring their children along to deliver meals.
The clients of Meals on Wheels program receive not only nourishment for their body but also for their spirit. Meals are planned by the organization’s on-staff nutritionist, prepared by a professional kitchen staff, and lovingly delivered by volunteers, explained Rosenfeld.
“Those meals are important, because it may be the only nutritious meal that our client gets that day, but just as importantly that visit may be the only human interaction that the client has that day, so that’s just as important, because that goes a long way towards keeping them healthy, happy, and living independently, which is what our mission is,” said Rosenfeld.
The volunteers are also trained to call the Meals on Wheels office if the client doesn’t answer the door, so the client can be given help if needed.
