A Virginia man has revealed why he gave away the engagement ring he bought.

Steven Crocker said he spent $1,700 on a diamond ring he planned to give to his girlfriend.

But they broke up last year just one month before his planned proposal.

“She’s a big Harry Potter fan, so I had this big thing all planned at Universal Studios,” Crocker told The Virginian-Pilot. “All paid for and everything.”

Crocker spent some time feeling heartbroken but later decided to give away the ring.

He posted on Facebook offering it for free to couples who are in love and want to get married but cannot afford a ring.
“I tried selling this ring to a handful of places and was offered a very depreciated value that I didn’t want to take because it’s not about the money, for me, it’s about love, and I’d hate to see a good ring go to waste, so I’m going to give it away. I’ve thought about this a lot and obviously by the timestamp of this post you can tell it has kept me up at night,” Crocker wrote.

“However, I don’t want to give it away to just anyone. I want to give it to a guy or girl who is so in love with their significant other and wants to take the next step but cannot afford a ring. I don’t think that anyone on MY friends list falls in that category, but someone out there does, which is why sharing this post is very much appreciated. I’ll send it anywhere in the US where someone is head-over-heels.”

The post was made on March 5.

Crocker told the Pilot that the idea came after a session of “sad music and lots of crying.”

“Giving it to a couple that will appreciate it, I figure it’s going to make me feel a lot better,” said Crocker, who works for WAVY-TV.

A number of people praised Crocker for offering to give away the ring.

“You are an incredibly amazing person and one day you'll meet someone deserving of you. Hold on to the ring and give it to her. Wishing you all the best!” said one user.

“So thoughtful and touching! You are so generous. We could all use more examples like you! The universe will reward you! Thank you for sharing!” said another.

“This is a very awesome thing your doing. I’m so sorry it didn’t work out but there’s girl just waiting for you. I’ve been with my soul mate 8 yrs now and we will marry 1 day. He was injured at work and unable to work now so are finances are low right now but with God watching over us we will make it. God bless you!” said yet another. “This is one of the most sweetest, selfless things I’ve seen ... to turn something heartbreaking into something that will forever help another couple when maybe they couldn’t otherwise make this next step happen is remarkable! You are a man that was raised right,” said another.
