Video: Sandstorm Sweeps Across Beach at Coney Island
After a sunny, warm day on Tuesday, May 15, a powerful thunderstorm swept across New York City, creating a sandstorm along the beach at Coney Island in Brooklyn.
Three deaths were reported after the storm, an 11-year-old girl in Newburgh, Orange County, and two men in Connecticut.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency in Putnam, Dutchess, Orange, and Sullivan counties as a result of the storm. There have also been 125 members of the New York National Guard deployed to assist county and local governments with recovery efforts.
The New York office of the National Weather Service is now looking for people to help conduct damage surveys.
