A gas station clerk helped fend off three would-be carjackers who attempted to drive off with a young woman’s vehicle at a gas station near Chicago.

Julia Vara was pumping gas at a gas station in Oak Park, Illinois, on Saturday, Jan. 27, when suddenly a man jumped in the driver’s seat.

The gas station clerk, Mukesh Patal, who saw the events unfold from inside the store, rushed to the scene. Vara says the suspect was threatening the use of a gun. Patal responded by announcing that he was calling the police.

The suspect and his two accomplices eventually fled the scene. Police caught up with all three and apprehended them shortly after.

Vara was thankful for Patal’s bravery and for putting himself at risk.

“It could have been much worse, so I am really grateful that it’s not as bad as it could have been,” Vara said.

“This is my customer, you know, so I help my customer,” Patal said.
