A new report claims that Damon Salvatore seemingly ending up dead came at the request of Ian Somerhalder, the actor who plays Damon.

Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev (Elena) have been engaged in an off-and-on relationship for some time, and Somerhalder is said to have wanted to get away from the awkwardness of shooting scenes with her.

Celebrity Dirty Laundry claims that they’ve heard that Somerhalder “may have requested an early leave from the show,” without specifying the source of the information. Besides residual awkwardness from Dobrev, his on-screen love interest, Somerhalder is said to want to focus on his burgeoning film career.

“It’s extremely unfortunate for the show that the two embarked on a torrid on-set romance, and then proceeded to have an equally difficult breakup,” the gossip website claims, referring to Somerhalder and Dobrev.

“Although the two tried to remain professional throughout all the awkwardness, sources close to the show’s production claim that they were never fully comfortable with each other after their split – and it shows in their scenes together. Producers didn’t want to risk jeopardizing the fandom even further, and when Ian requested that his character be killed off early, they didn’t hesitate to jump ship.”

Somerhalder is under contract through the end of season 6 and executive producer Julie Plec has assured fans that he’ll be seen again.

“I think it means there’s a mystery attached to how the show ended. Did they die? Did they find peace? Are they still on the Other Side? Does the Other Side still exist? If not, where the hell are they? And will they ever come back? Certainly, we will see Ian [Somerhalder] and Kat [Graham] again, but where and in what context? That’s part of the mystery of Season 6,” she told TVLine.

Somerhalder recently returned to social media, telling his fans via Twitter: “Hi twitter verse! Ive been pretty quiet, taking a slight break from technology while traveling&working. However you never cease to amaze me.”

He gave no indication as to whether he had anything to do with what happened to Damon
