Last week, U.S. stocks had their best week in around a year, aimed by optimism leading up to second-quarter corporate earnings season, which officially begins this week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 59 points, or 0.6 percent, while the S&P 500 Index increased by 7.7 points, or 0.7 percent.
The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index increased by 21 points, or 1 percent. The Dow was up around 5 percent for the week. Data released last Friday showed that U.S. inventories at wholesalers rose 0.5 percent in May, which was near expectations.
Trading on the New York Stock Exchange was light, in anticipation to earnings week. Among analysts, most expect earnings to beat expectations, but what they will look for is its full-year guidance, which will help investors determine how the U.S. economy may fare the rest of the year.
