UPS is now requiring photo identification from all customers who wish to send packages.

According to the company's website, customers without a pre-printed shipping label will be required to present identification or be turned away.

"Since retail centers experience a significant increase in business from occasional shippers during the busy holidays, this enhancement adds a prudent step in our multi-layered approach to security," said Dale Hayes, UPS vice president of small business and retail marketing in a statement.

The policy is not completely new, as customer service centers have had the requirement since 2005.

As of last week, required identification has become standard in over 26,000 UPS locations worldwide.

According to UPS, the new policy is part of its ongoing review of security measures. It comes one month after explosive packages found their way onto a UPS cargo plane.

In October, a UPS plane headed to Chicago was stopped in London after packages were discovered to contain explosives hidden inside a printer cartridge.

The packages were determined to have been sent from a retail location in Yemen.
