For many people, crossword puzzles are a fun little challenge to pass some time—but for one woman, the game turned out to be a gift that just kept giving.

A 60-year-old woman from St. Clair County, Michigan recently purchased a Super Bonus Cashword game. The $20 scratch-off, with a grand prize of a million dollars, resembles a crossword: you scratch off the puzzle, and the prize depends on how many words you discover.

And when the woman went home and scratched off the ticket, she realized it was her lucky day:

She won $500!

However, for some reason she wasn’t able to collect her winnings:

“I went back to the Speedway to get paid and they told me they weren’t able to cash it,” she said.

So she went home—and realized the reason she couldn’t collect her $500—she had actually won a lot more!

“I took the ticket back home and found two more words, which would have been $5,000,” she said.

But that wasn’t all. Since she had missed some words the first time, it stood to reason that she may have missed even more.

“The next day after I got home from work, I decided to go over the ticket one more time. That’s when I found the word ‘raid.’ I thought: ‘This can’t be real!’”

The woman had a revelation that made her instantly call the Michigan Lottery offices. They confirmed some stunning news:

She had won a million dollars!

“I started shaking so much I dropped the phone,” the big winner told the Michigan Lottery.

After visiting the Lottery headquarters, she opted to receive her winnings as a one-time lump sum of $634,000—a life-changing amount of money for the 60-year-old.

“Winning is amazing,” she said. “Instead of watching my pennies, now I’m counting my dollars.”

The anonymous woman said she plans to pay off her debts, travel, and then save the rest. It’s a reminder that your luck can always change overnight—and to always double-check your lotto tickets.
