Woman investigates an abandoned doghouse in the middle of the park and discovers it is not empty

"Not knowing if anything would be inside, you never know so I still checked!"

Judy Obregon, from Fort Worth, Texas, takes a walk to Echo Lake Park nearly every day. But, according to The Dodo, she almost skipped her trip one day in late April because she wasn’t feeling well.

But she decided to go anyway—and it’s a miracle that she did, because on this trip she happened to find something out of the ordinary.

There was a little doghouse left in the middle of the park.

Obregon, the founder of animal rescue organization The Abandoned Ones, knew this was unusual, and something told her to go investigate.

“Not knowing if anything would be inside, you never know so I still checked!” she wrote on Facebook.

She looked inside the tiny house—and realized it wasn’t empty after all.

The house had an abandoned dog inside.

It seemed that the dog had been intentionally left by her owners. It wasn’t clear how long the dog had been out for, but the sheets inside were wet and the dog seemed timid about coming out of the house.

“Hey baby,” Obregon told the dog. “Did somebody just dump you?”

It wasn’t too shocking—according to The Dodo, the park is an infamous dumping ground for pets, which is why Obregon keeps an eye out on her walks, but it was still a devastating sight.

“Heartbreaking!” Obregon wrote. “Just heartbreaking that someone would actually think she could survive!”

So Obregon rescued the dog herself.

She went back to her car and got some clean towels, and lured the nervous dog out of the shelter.

The puppy was only about 10 weeks old and weighed three pounds, but she was suffering from some health problems—likely the reason her owners got rid of her. She had mange resulting in a serious skin infection.

Obregon brought her to the vet, where she was fixed up and taken to a foster home. She has received plenty of emotional support to recuperate.

They found that the puppy was particularly fond of belly rubs.

She was also given a name: Najila, meaning “eyes that glisten.”

That’s “Jila” for short. “She has the sweetest soul with her soulful eyes!” Obregon explained on Facebook. “I wanted to find a name that meant something.”

Najila has been recovering well in foster care.

“Jila … aka Baby J , loves belly rubs and as of today [is] doing so much better,” Obregon said in a June 1 update. “She is still in her healing process , but her [spirit] is up with so much happiness.”

“She’s come a long way since rescue.”

It looks like Najila will be ready for adoption soon and placed in a forever home. It’s a remarkable turn of events for a puppy who was nearly left for dead less than two months ago.

But fate and some compassionate strangers intervened, and it looks like this dog is getting a happy ending after all.
