Woman finds stray dog alone and hungry and decides to take him home — what she does with him has the internet’s attention

It’s very easy to make a best friend out of a dog. As affable creatures, they would like nothing more than to spend their days happily enjoying their owner’s company.

While there are many people who take joy in spending this time with their pets on walks or at the park, one particular owner decided to do something rather different with her pup.

Before he met his owner, Ivy Diep, Popeye the dog was out on the streets of Los Angeles. Alone and always hungry, he was focused on finding food and trying to survive.

All that changed when he met Diep.

“I found him as a stray,” Diep explained in a Bored Panda interview. “He was such a mess – super skinny, heavily matted, dirty. It wasn’t long before he made himself at home at my place with my other dogs.”

Taking the scared dog home, Ivy never intended to keep him, as she already had a few pets.

However, an emotional connection made separation impossible.

She decided to keep the pup and named him Popeye, and the two quickly became best friends.

Once he was well fed and got a much needed haircut, a friend of Diep’s was amazed at how adorable he was. The friend suggested she share pictures of him online—but Diep had an idea that would go one step further and result in social media stardom.

“One of my friends, Jen, suggested that I create an Instagram account for Popeye because he was cute,” Diep went on to explained. “Jen and I liked to go on what we call ‘Instagram dates’ and take pics of our food.”

“I’d bring Popeye any time I can, and we realized he was really good around food.”

The idea of sharing pictures of Popeye in front of food instantly took off, and the cute little dog now has photos from some of the most popular restaurants in town.

Their Instagram page currently has almost 300,000 followers. Popeye now has fans around the world who frequently comment on his pictures.

“He doesn’t lunge for food or really even care for it,” Diep shared. “He just liked to be out. He’ll get nibbles of anything that’s safe for him.”

“I also carry a bag of treats for him, in case there’s nothing he can have,” she said.

Once scavenging the streets for a meal, Popeye is happy to now have the world of food open to him.

Despite achieving internet success and becoming a social media star, Popeye is clearly just excited to share a meal with his best friend Diep—and look fashionable at the same time!
