Whether it’s getting themselves into crazy and hilarious situations, throwing a tantrum at the worst possible times, or being so adorable you just can’t stand it, kids sure do the darndest things.

One young toddler truly showed herself to be something special, however, when her father suddenly collapsed and was in critical condition. The little girl did not miss a beat; keeping in mind the lessons her parents taught her, she immediately ran out the door to find help the only way a three-year-old could think of—by walking to the local fire station.

In late August of 2010, the precocious Alesaundra Tafoya was playing in her North California home. Her father, Frank Tafoya, was watching her, but needed to take his medication.

Unfortunately, he mixed up the dosage; he ended up taking what he called a “bedtime-dose” and collapsed in the middle of the room.

Alesaundra Tafoya was playing in the living room when her father collapsed—but she knew exactly what to do.

For most children caught in this situation, they probably would not know what to do. Maybe they would cry or get scared. Alesaundra, though, was taught differently.

Her parents had told her that if there was ever an emergency, she should go to a safe location. Specifically, they often mentioned the Fire Station 243, located less than two blocks from their home—a fire station they regularly passed on their way to and from their house.

And that is exactly what she did. Once she noticed that her father was in distress, she immediately rushed out the door and trotted the short distance to the local fire station. When the toddler arrived, she relayed the story; she told the firemen that her father was ‘frozen,’ according to CNN, and that he needed help.

Firefighters followed her back to her home and quickly worked to save her dad’s life.

The two firefighters on duty were surprised by their unique visitor.

“I’ve been here over 20 years,” Capt. Robert Villalovoz said according to CNN. “It’s the first time I’ve had a 3-year-old walk up to the fire station.”

But they immediately realized the seriousness of the situation and followed little Alesaundra all the way back to her house. She took them into her living room where her father remained unconscious.

When they arrived, Tafoya was in critical condition. The firefighters quickly administered what support they could, but Tafoya needed to be rushed to the hospital. They arranged transport for the man, and luckily, he was quickly resuscitated.

Alesaundra’s quick thinking saved her father’s life—the little girl was a hero!

According to CNN, doctor’s noted that without Alesaundra’s quick action, Tafoya could have died. Thanks to lessons her parents taught her, she saved her father’s life.

“She’s been listening,” her mother said according to CNN. “What we’ve been teaching her, she’s been listening, and that’s good.”

Even the local fire department was impressed; they awarded the little girl with a “hero’s commendation” for her quick thinking and coolness under pressure.
