It’s not an easy job being a waitress. You serve occasionally rude customers in a busy restaurant all day, working for low pay and relying on tips.

It’s also not work that guarantees time off on holidays and weekends, so many hard-working moms across the country had to work this past Mother’s Day.

But for one waitress, it turned out to be a shift she would never forget.

Since Brenda Pearson recently relocated to Roland, Alabama, she has been working as a waitress at the local 4 Star Diner. It’s a job to provide for herself and her kids at home.

Unfortunately it drew her away from her family this Mother’s Day, May 13, when she worked a shift at the diner.

One of her customers that day was a truck driver from Mississippi. Pearson started chatting with the man—she got his cheeseburger order wrong, forgetting to bring two patties.

“It actually got made wrong first and I said well, it’s not correct,” Pearson told KFSM. “But we fixed it and got it all ready.”

However, it turned out the truck driver didn’t mind the mistake at all—and it certainly didn’t hurt Pearson’s tip.

Because as the driver paid his bill, Pearson saw the number on the check—and was stunned.

He left a $1,000 tip!

“I couldn’t believe it,” Pearson said of the massive tip, on only an $11 tab. “I couldn’t hardly breathe. It took my breath away.”

So what inspired the truck driver, a man named David Platt, to leave such a huge tip?

Platt said he realized the waitress deserved the money after chatting with her.

“It was late and there wasn’t really anybody around and so I got talking to her a little bit,” Platt said. “We talked about the Lord and about her life and her children.”

“I got the impression that she was having a hard time of it, so I thought I’d just help her out a little bit.”

But that wasn’t the end of the story.

Platt returned to the restaurant just an hour later, wanting to follow his burger with some pie.

When he was finished, he left yet another tip …

Another thousand dollars!

That’s a $2,000 tip from a single customer in one shift. It was a remarkable act of random generosity, and no one had ever seen anything like it.

“Some of the girls get $20 on Sunday and stuff when they have special deals,” customer Violet Hubbard said. “But $1,000…$2,000? It’s amazing.”

Pearson plans to use the money on her family.

Fitting for a Mother’s Day surprise, Pearson is going to focus on caring for her children.

“I have two children at home,” she said. “I’ve been a stay-at-home mom for a couple of years. It will help us get caught up on the move and it was just God-sent.”

She also plans to help her stepdaughters and their families.

It seems like a lot to spend $2,000 on a tip to a total stranger, but for this truck driver, it was the best thing he could’ve spent it on.

“Self gratification only goes so far,” Platt said. “So, when you’re helping another person, you’re adding something to the world.”

“It’s an investment and people, people are what’s important.”
