Working a restaurant server in the United States is not a thankless job.
In fact, without the “gratitude” of customers, these waiters and waitresses probably could not make the meager living they currently do.
But in order to earn these tips, they have to wear smiles on their faces every day, no matter what kind of customers they have to serve—being happy for a living is part of the job and it can get emotionally and mentally draining.
Being a restaurant server is all about hospitality.
Last October, a group of 13-year-olds were celebrating their Homecoming at a local restaurant. It was their first time dining alone and the experience must have been pretty exciting. The waiter attending them recognized this and did his best to accommodate their needs.
He made sure to jot down their allergies, their preferences, and was simply kind and understanding at the fact that these kids didn’t really know restaurant etiquette that well.
When the time came for the check to arrive, the waiter even separated the bill for the kids to make the process as pleasant and easy as possible.
All the while, he was courteous, polite, and patient. They seemed pretty satisfied and thanked him profusely as they left the restaurant.
Then he saw what they left him.
When he returned to the table, he was immediately dismayed. They had left him a mere $3.28 on a rather large order.
“Nothing more frustrating than when I get little to nothing for a tip and the customer is smiling and thanking me profusely as they exit,” the waiter wrote on Imgur according to Bored Panda.
Though he was a bit annoyed by it, he did not say or do anything. The kids were young, and probably did not have all that much money. Besides there was nothing he could do about it.
He decided to forget about the bad tip, but the teenagers did not.
Nearly a week later, though, the teenager returned to the restaurant and left the waiter a heartwarming surprise: a letter accompanied by $18 and some change.
The letter was an apology for their ignorance. It explained that they did not understand tipping etiquette as it was their first dining experience alone, and all they had was $3.28. When they realized their mistake, however, they were horrified.
“We knew we had to make it right,” the letter read according to Bored Panda. “You were the best waiter we could ask for.”
Moved by their thoughtfulness, the waiter posted the story to social media where also sent a message to the kids.
“Nothing like this has ever happened to me,” the waiter wrote according to Bored Panda. “I really appreciate the effort and kindness. I hope your Homecoming was fantastic!”
And just like that a seemingly dour story got an sweet, happy ending.
