An upstate New York school district is warning dog walkers that dogs are banned on school grounds, threatening to call police on people who don’t comply.

The issue came to the attention of Port Washington Union Free School District school officials after workers found dog droppings on the local high school’s athletic field.

The field features brand-new artificial turf paid for with part of a $70 million school bond, reported News12.
The district recently posted a notice on its website titled: “We love pets, but not on school property.”

“The safety and security of our students, staff and community members are our top priorities, which is why pets are prohibited from school district property,” the district stated.

“The preservation of our property is crucial to ensure that activities on our fields take place in a safe environment and the community’s investment in our facilities is protected. We appreciate the community’s understanding and look forward to this situation resolving itself as we move forward.”

Anyone who is spotted walking a dog on school grounds is subject to a visit by police, according to officials.

The local police told Newsday that they would enforce the rule.

“We would absolutely go and tell them they need to get off,” said Robert Del Muro, deputy chief of the Port Washington police.

However, Del Muro said he hadn’t heard one complaint about dogs on school grounds.

“There’s been nothin,“ he said. ”I can honestly say I don’t ever recall one complaint about a dog.”
