Are you ready for a real brain challenge, a riddle that sounds fairly easy at first, but actually isn’t? If you’re game to unravel some tricky wording and resolve this inside-out family relationship, try this one on for size!
This one’s from Playbuzz, in which you need to identify the quiz master’s relationship with a person named, Teresa. Can you do it?
The riddle goes…
“If Teresa’s daughter is my daughter’s mother, what am I to Teresa?”
There are five multiple-choice answers to choose from in answer to the question, “What am I to Teresa?” They are:
e) I am Teresa
According to Playbuzz, only 3 percent of people who try it get it right on the first try. Are you one of them? Once you’ve come up with your own answer, check below.
The answer is c) Daughter
Was your answer correct?
If not, then take a look at one possible way to unravel the relationship:
Start off with the first part: “If Teresa’s daughter is my daughter’s mother …” This means that Teresa’s daughter must also be a mother, the mother of my daughter, which would make me either my daughter’s mother or father!
Then, take a look at the second part, which poses the question, “What am I to Teresa?” Then, we just need to determine my relationship to Teresa based on what we have already found (that I am either my daughter’s mother or father). There are, of course, two options:
1) If I am my daughter’s mother, (who is also Teresa’s daughter), then I am a daughter of Teresa.
2) If I am my daughter’s father, (possibly whose spouse or partner must be Teresa’s daughter), then I might be son-in-law to Teresa (or something else possibly).
However, if we look at the multiple-choice answers, we see that only one of the above options are available to choose from: c) Daughter, which is the best answer!
In a poll, most people answered that they were Teresa. What was your answer? Please share it in the comments!
