Everyone knows dogs love playing fetch, but as one viral video shows, they love it so much that no obstacle will stand in their way.

Chad Nelson, a photojournalist for KARE 11, shared a video of his 2-year-old son, Conway, playing fetch with a pup in a family friend’s backyard in Savage, Minnesota.

What made the sight so special: the toddler and the dog were on opposite sides of a fence.

The video was captured by Erin Richter, a friend of Nelson and his wife. Conway had struck up a bond with Dozer, the Labrador retriever next door, who was a lot more game than his own dogs.

“Conway just loves playing catch,” Nelson told KARE 11. “We have two dogs but neither one will play fetch. So he was pretty excited to have someone that would.”

It gave the toddler the opportunity to practice his throw: “I had Conway throwing a ball at about 2-weeks-old,” said Nelson, who played baseball in college. “I’d put the ball in his hand when he was laying on his back.”

After Nelson shared the videos on social media, they went massively viral: on Twitter alone, the clip has over 13 million views and over a million likes. There are another 12 million views on Facebook.

It was a popularity that no one saw coming.

“It was just a cute thing,” Nelson said. “We just thought Conway was being cute and our friends would like it and all of sudden it’s being shared to thousands of people.”

While Conway and Dozer aren’t neighbors, the dog still has other playmates he can turn to. Richter says her own son, Landon, plays the same over-the-fence game.

“They play ball every time they are both outside,” she said. “Landon quits throwing once the ball becomes too slobbery but Dozer will keep dropping balls or bones over until he has to go inside!”
